The famous silverback has been spotted in recent weeks roaming around the headquarters of Kahuzi-Biega National Park in Tshivanga, Kabare Territory.
It almost seems as if Bonane came to “catch up on the news,” to see what is happening with those who watch over him and his family.
Since the outbreak of war in South Kivu in February 2025, the presence of armed groups has made it very difficult to locate the gorillas. But this reappearance of Bonane, accompanied by some members of his family, shows that they are alive and surviving despite the enormous pressure on their habitat in recent months.
Let us remember that Kahuzi-Biega National Park is the only place in the world where one can visit eastern lowland gorillas in their natural habitat.
A powerful message on this World Gorilla Day: “As long as there is life, there is hope. Let us remain committed to peace, to the Park, and to our gorillas.”
