ACTIVITIES NEAR THE PARK

A stay in Kahuzi-Biega is not limited to activities within the Park. The surrounding region, including Bukavu, offers a range of additional sites and experiences that visitors can explore with the support of Park staff and local partners.

LWIRO PRIMATE REHABILITATION CENTRE (CRPL)

Located just 4 km from Kahuzi-Biega National Park, the Lwiro Primate Rehabilitation Center (CRPL) was created in 2002 by the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) and the Center for Research in Natural Sciences (CRSN).

The CRPL specializes in the rehabilitation of chimpanzees and primates of various species that have been victims of illegal trafficking linked to hunting and the wild meat trade.

It also takes care of other species including parrots, reptiles and turtles. Its work includes rescue in collaboration with ICCN, rehabilitation, social reintegration of animals, training of veterinarians and conservation professionals, environmental education for young people and surrounding communities, awareness-raising among uniformed personnel on conservation issues and laws in the DRC, supporting communities in terms of local employment and livelihoods, and collaborating with the authorities in terms of law enforcement and the care of seized animals.

Housed in old buildings, the CRPL is constantly upgrading its infrastructure to cope with the growing number of primates in its care. The Park team can arrange a visit to the Center. The guided tour is subject to a fee, payable directly upon arrival in Lwiro.
