How do I get to the Park?

The Park headquarters are located in Tshivanga, 1.5 hours from Bukavu. Bukavu is accessible by road, boat (from Goma), or via Kamembe Airport (Rwanda). Access to the Park is subject to prevailing security conditions, and visitors are responsible for making enquiries in advance and confirming access arrangements prior to travel. See the VISIT > ORGANIZE YOUR VISIT > GENERAL INFORMATION pages for more details.

Can I see gorillas in the wild?

Yes. Several families of Grauer's gorillas are accustomed to respectful tourism. See the VISIT > MEET THE GORILLAS page for more information.

What happens on a gorilla trek?

A guided hike in the forest (2,200–2,600 m), followed by an hour of silent observation of the gorillas.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. A confirmation of your visit must be obtained in advance from the Park's Tourism team. Go to the BOOKING page to fill out the visitor form, which must be completed by each visitor.

What should I bring?

Long pants, long-sleeved shirt, waterproof boots, raincoat, insect repellent, mask, water bottle, warm clothing. See the "What to bring" section.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry seasons (June–September and January–February) offer the best conditions, but the Park is open all year round. Are children allowed? The gorilla trek is reserved for visitors aged 15 and over. Children aged 10 and over can take part in other treks, provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

Can I see chimpanzees or other species?

How does KBNP ensure the safety of visitors and staff?

The safety of visitors and staff is a top priority for the Park and the following measures are implemented:

  • Regular patrols: Teams of eco-guards patrol the Park regularly to deter illegal activities.
  • Trained guides: All our guides are trained in first aid and emergency safety procedures.
  • Communication: We maintain constant communication with local authorities and security forces to monitor the security situation and coordinate our actions.
  • Risk assessment: We conduct regular risk assessments to identify potentially dangerous areas and adapt our itineraries accordingly.
  • Information: We inform visitors of the safety guidelines to follow and areas to avoid.
  • Accompaniment: Visitors are always accompanied by experienced guides and armed guards, if necessary, depending on the areas visited.
  • Coordination: We work closely with local communities to gather information and prevent incidents.

We constantly adapt our safety measures to changing circumstances and are committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone who visits or works in KBNP. It is important to note that some areas of the Park may be temporarily inaccessible due to security concerns. Visitors are encouraged to check current conditions before planning their visit.

Is the Park on the endangered heritage list?

Yes, since 1997. We are actively working on its rehabilitation.

What are the iconic species of KBNP?

The Park is home to a large population of Grauer's gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri), an endangered species. 

What are the major conservation challenges facing KBNP?

KBNP faces challenges such as poaching, deforestation, population pressure, and armed conflict. We can provide you with detailed information on these issues and the efforts being made to overcome them.

Why are Grauer's gorillas endangered?

Threats: poaching, habitat loss, conflict. The Park protects more than 50% of the world's population of this subspecies.

What is the exact area of KBNP and how is it managed?

KBNP covers an area of 6,000 km². It is managed by a dedicated team under the supervision of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which has a public-private partnership with the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN). Park management includes surveillance, protection of fauna and flora, scientific research, community development, and promotion of sustainable tourism. How does the Park combat deforestation?

By working with communities, promoting alternative livelihoods, implementing surveillance measures and using SMART and EarthRanger.

What are the economic benefits of tourism for local communities?

Tourism in KBNP generates significant economic benefits for local communities, contributing to their development and improving their living conditions. These benefits are manifested in several ways:

  • Jobs: Tourism creates direct jobs (guides, porters, hotel and restaurant staff, etc.) and indirect jobs (suppliers of goods and services, farmers, etc.) for members of local communities.
  • Income: Local communities benefit from sharing the Park's revenues. A portion of the entrance fees is returned to the communities.

What scientific research programs are currently underway in KBNP?
