HIKING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

Hikes in Kahuzi-Biega National Park take place at relatively high altitudes (2,200–2,600 meters), in a cool mountain climate and across landscapes that are distinctive within the region. Visitors experience a remarkable variety of scenery along these routes.

In the Park, careful observation quickly reveals the diversity of species found in the forest.

Several types of hikes are possible in KBNP:

  • Guided hikes
  • 4×4 tours with guides

MOUNT KAHUZI

Mount Kahuzi, whose name means "where the wind blows" in the local language, is the highest peak in the Park at 3,308 meters. After about an hour’s drive by vehicle from the Park headquarters in Tshivanga, the ascent takes approximately four hours and the descent three hours. You will pass through a succession of single-species bamboo groves, Afro-montane forests, and then very low, characteristic subalpine vegetation. The view from the summit offers a 360° panorama, including of the shores of Lake Kivu, the Kahuzi mountain range, the Musisi swamp, and, in the distance, the sprawling city of Bukavu.

Note: upon prior request, it is possible to camp overnight at the summit of Mount Kahuzi (accompanied by eco-guards, tents available for hire).

MOUNT BIEGA

Like Mount Kahuzi, Mount Biega is an ancient volcano that has erupted several times throughout history but is now completely extinct. Its slopes are dotted with ancient volcanic rocks. At 2,790 meters above sea level, it is the second highest peak in the Park. The Afro-alpine vegetation is remarkable and very distinctive. After about two hours by vehicle from Tshivanga, the ascent takes about two and a half hours and the descent no more than an hour and a half.

MOUNT BUGULUMIZA

A peak near the Park headquarters in Tshivanga, Mount Bugulumiza offers a breathtaking view of the two dormant volcanoes that give the Park its name. This area is regularly occupied by gorilla families: if you remain discreet, you may be lucky enough to encounter them. Birds can be easily spotted throughout the route. Accompanied by guides, the ascent can be made by 4x4 (20 minutes) or on foot (2 hours). The descent on foot takes 1.5 hours.

TSHIBATI FALLS

Located a few kilometers above the Lwiro Primate Rehabilitation Center (CRPL), accessible after about a 30-minute drive from Lwiro on a very picturesque track, followed by an easy 30- to 45-minute walk along the edge of the Park, there are three waterfalls. For the moment, only the first two waterfalls are accessible to visitors.

The 1.7 km tourist trail begins at the Tshibati patrol post and leads through secondary forest to a striking first waterfall. Visitors can pause here to enjoy views of the cascading water and the cool mist created by the falls, which adds to the atmosphere of the site. Bathing directly beneath this first waterfall is not permitted for safety reasons.

Continuing along the trail leads to a second waterfall. Although smaller than the first, it is also an attractive site, with a natural pool – where bathing is allowed – and that offers a peaceful setting to rest and enjoy the surrounding forest.

This activity, accessible directly from the Park headquarters in Tshivanga, offers guided walks with the chance to see many species of birds and splendid views of the Park's landscapes. Different trails range from 2.9 to 4.2 km and are adapted to visitors' desires and fitness levels. For those who wish to enjoy a multi-day experience in Kahuzi-Biega, these walks offer a relaxing, flexible, and educational option.

The trails are maintained in collaboration with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, providing additional temporary employment opportunities for local residents while contributing to the conservation of KBNP.
